Christmas afternoon, 1979. Seems I always have liked Star Wars:

"Too close for missles; I'm switching to guns!"

Just in time to ruin my meat-eating experience at San Diego, a fire has destroyed Kansas City Barbecue on West Market Street, just outside of the official AiT San Diego enclave at the Embassy Suites. We eat there three times at least during the week of SD, with only once some drunk fool singing "You've Got That Lovin' Feelin'," what with the sleazy bar scene of Top Gun having been filmed there. I've seen more people run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art like Rocky in the summer I was there than I have having sung that Righteous Brothers song, and I've been to KCBBQ about a million times more in the last 15 years.

You can be my wingman anytime, Kansas City Barbecue. RIP.

I Gots Me Some Enthusiasm features me doing something I never do, and outlining a bit of verbiage for The Big Lebowski sequel I'd like to see, and something I do every year as convention season starts: a cautionary tale for all you guys who want to talk to me at San Diego.

Our good friend Adam Beechen wrote us an email this morning, congratulating Walker on his first birthday and signed off with "I assume all of you aren't doing a whole lot to celebrate or anything."

hee hee

We'd already gone to the hospital to give a bottle of wine and a card with Walker's picture on it to Kalami, the delivery nurse who stayed an extra hour-and-a-half after her night shift ended just to make sure Walker made it safely into the world and that Mimi had a continuity of experience with the labor. Mimi really wanted Kalami to stay, and she did, and it really meant a lot to us.

So it didn't seem like too far to go to get up first thing and meet her as the night shift ended, to show her Walker at One and thank her for a job well done.

Thanks, Kalami!

Omaha, Nebraska on Omaha Perez: "Perusing the graphic novel without regard to text, the illustrations may appear elementary in comparison to the cover, the figures at first stiff. When synthesizing text and image however, the illustrations mesh perfectly with Perez’s askew view of Holmes."

Matches at The Iceberg Lounge weighs in on Holmes: "If you're looking for something respectful of its source material, this ain't it. What you'll find in its place is a witty parody of the legend, with Holmes recast as an arrogant yet moronic prick, held together only by the not-inconsiderable services of his trusty Watson. Watson narrates the story, and we learn that the legend of Holmes as the World's Greatest Detective is entirely the invention of Watson, who spins, distorts, and outright lies about the facts plainly in front of him in order to preserve the myth."

...and Matches has surveyed quite a few of not-the-usual-AiT-suspects, looking at Rock Bottom, Filler, and The Couriers.

I Gots Me Some Enthusiasm has as its not-surprising subject this week my unhealthy love for Star Trek; perhaps moreso is the source of this week's enthusiasm for it: John Byrne.

Oh, and you've seen this on YMB and at Rich Johnston's column, yeah? Here's the 29-year old pic we're talking about:

Yeah, well, let's see a pic of you from 1979.
